Vinyl banners can be categorized into two main types based on their usage and light-transmission properties: opaque vinyl and translucent vinyl. Each type can be further classified as follows:
1. Opaque Vinyl (Frontlit Vinyl)
This is the most widely used type for street-side signage (accounting for approximately 80%). The back is coated with an opaque material that minimizes light transmission, making it ideal for applications illuminated from the front.
Note: For outdoor use exposed to direct sunlight—such as temporary street banners or overhead street signs—blockout (opaque) vinyl ensures greater visibility and clarity.
2. Translucent/Backlit Vinyl
This type of vinyl has a thinner chemical coating than opaque vinyl, allowing light to pass through easily. It's suitable for applications with backlighting, such as light boxes and illuminated storefront signs at night.
If you are interested in making vinyl signs, please tell us what type you intend to use them for, such as storefront signs, illuminated signs, or backdrops. We can then recommend the appropriate type and size.
